16. DAR - Daughters of the American Revolution
Were your ancestor among the participants in the American Revolution?
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is an organization with a deeply rich history. More than 930,000 women have joined the organization since it was founded. They became members to honor their heritage as well as make a difference in their communities.
With some 3,000 chapters nationally and internationally, DAR has teams of volunteers who can assist you with your research. DAR also has a host of online genealogical resources.
For example, the Descendants Search database includes more than 7,100,000 names. DAR has an immense collection of family history information gleaned from family bibles with approximately 40,000 entries.
Also, DAR has amassed a unique database of pension records from the revolutionary war. The result of this work was 340 typescript volumes.
The DAR’s Genealogical Records Committee Reports began in 1913 and continue to arrive. The information in these 20,000 typescript volumes is predominately Bible and cemetery records.
To become a member, you will need to verify your descendancy from a patriot in the Revolutionary War and submit a formal application. There is lots of help available and once confirmed, you will receive a formal certificate. What a great item to share with family and friends.
For more information you can contact DAR directly or join your local genealogical society.
