You were thrilled to watch the TV program where the detective nailed the bad guy by having the postage stamp on the threatening letter envelope sent out for DNA testing and then, very surreptitiously capturing a sample of the bad guy’s DNA from a coffee cup.  Wow!  Technology to the rescue!

Yes, it is possible to secure a DNA sampling from an old postage stamp, or the envelope (assuming someone licked the stamp or the sealing strip).  How about that?  So now, when you are browsing through your collection of old family letters, etc. do not throw out that old envelope.

Similarly, do not throw out Grandma’s old hairbrush or that wee curl of hair she kept of your Grampa.   Certain companies can also conduct DNA tests on hair samples for you.

While the cost of such services might deter some, such testing may be well worth the expense. Testing such samples requires some significant technology and the labs that perform this service charge accordingly.  Only certain laboratories have the necessary equipment and staff for such analysis.  Nevertheless, the information might just help you break through your “Brick Wall” mystery.

We know that many variables enter the testing process, and some extra steps may be required.  Results may vary but nevertheless, here is yet another option for the dedicated genealogical detective.
